Description of Organization

The Kidney Dialysis Foundation Limited (KDF) is a non-profit charitable organisation, established in February 1996 by Dr Gordon Ku, a kidney specialist. KDF provides dialysis treatment to needy members of the community, ensuring that these patients will not be deprived of treatment due to financial difficulties. KDF also conduct public education on kidney and kidney-related diseases as well as supports research seeking a cure for diabetes. At present, KDF runs three haemodialysis centres, serving approximately 300 patients monthly. KDF is focused on a niche group of patients – those coming from the lower income group in Singapore. Majority of our patients are elderly with 56% of the patient population above 60 years of age. Till date, KDF has served over 912 patients and 84 of whom have successfully transplanted. The following some programmes KDF runs at our centres.
1. Subsidised Dialysis Programme (CORE)
2. Subsidised Medication Programme
3. Protein Supplement Programme
4. Portable Subsidy Programme (HD and PD)
5. Transport Subsidy Programme
6. Adopt-a-Patient Programme

Intended use of funds through the YFC 2023 programme

Funds raised through YFC 2019 programme will be used to fund the transport subsidy programme which supports the transportation needs of selected patients. Under this programme, patients who have been identified to have a high fall risk or other conditions which affects their mobility will receive a monthly transport allowance from KDF to support their journey to and fro dialysis sessions via taxi. The objective of this programme is to ensure at-risk patients are able to commute safely for dialysis.

Engaging and involving the YFC participants

KDF will initiate a visit to our dialysis centre where volunteers will be introduced to kidney failure and dialysis, as well as our organisation and the beneficiaries we serve. Some time will be allocated for volunteers to talk to selected patients to understand their challenges and how they cope with the lifestyle changes that they need to make due to kidney failure and dialysis.
