Beyond Social Services
An example would be creating a culture of learning through educational and development programmes and linking their caregivers to job and training opportunities.
So far, we’ve reached out to over 10,000 units in government rental blocks in Bukit Ho Swee, Lengkok Bahru, Henderson, Whampoa, Ang Mo Kio, Lavender, Stirling, Jalan Bukit Merah and Ghim Moh.
Intended use of funds through the YFC 2018 programme
We provide an early childhood programme at the Healthy Start Child Development Centre for children below age 6, whose developmental and learning needs have been hindered by their social disadvantages. The program offers a quality environment and a pre-school curriculum that nurtures children’s growth emotionally, socially, cognitively and physically. The centre actively involves parents, caregivers and volunteers in the childrens’ education.
We also conduct activities for children and youth that strengthen their ability to learn. These include outings, structured interest groups, sports programmes and individualised tuition.
We believe that the best leaders and mentors can be nurtured from within each community we serve. Therefore, we provide opportunities for leadership development through workshops, activities mentoring and supervision. The aim is to raise youth leaders with good values and encourage them to be positive role models in their communities.
Engaging and involving the YFC participants
Beyond believes that we cannot do this work by ourselves. Therefore, we actively engage and partner volunteers from the wider community, educational institutions and corporate organisations. Many of our educational support programs are facilitated by youth volunteers from schools and tertiary institutions. As a YFC participant, there are many opportunities for involvement in our programs and activities. We regularly involve volunteers in outings, learning programmes, sports and door knocking to meet and engage families. Through mentoring and training, our youth performed at a fund-raising concert organised by Project Candenti, a YFC team in 2017. Through such activities, our youth are able to build valuable friendships & networks in the wider community, thereby promoting social cohesion and integration.
